Primary Briefing
Treftiel is unlike any other mazda in Shivath, a place where the ground shimmers in iridescent hues due to rich deposits of metals, especially silver. This constant shine bathes every part of the land in rainbow-like reflections, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. But beneath its beauty lies a deeply stratified society, one driven by ambition, technology, and a fierce sense of competition.
Climate and Geography
Treftiel’s climate is temperate but unique, with the weather often shaped as much by technological influence as by nature. During the day, sunlight reflects off the silvery clouds and metallic soil, creating a dazzling spectacle where the sky and ground seem to glow in unison. This reflective environment results in awe-inspiring phenomena like fractal light storms and shimmering mists that cloak the land, making navigation nearly impossible without advanced guidance systems.
At night, Treftiel’s atmosphere reveals even more wonder. Silvery auroras and rainbow nocturnal skies light up in a phenomenon known as the "Midnight Glow." Shadows and colors merge into brilliant displays, transforming the continent into a world that feels like a living dream.
Society and Culture
Treftiel’s society is divided into vertical tiers – a structure that’s both a physical reality and a social hierarchy. Each “floor” represents not just a different part of the continent, but also a distinct lifestyle, degree of access to technology, and status:
Lower City – The lowest and wildest level, close to the chaotic force of the Angra Mainyu. Here, rugged explorers, tribes, survive in dangerous, raw conditions, coexisting with strange creatures and unpredictable landscapes. Here lies a big part of the industrial heart of Treftiel, full of factories and smelters that produce the resources needed for the entire continent. This is where hard labor reigns, and its people work relentlessly to support the upper levels.
Medium City – A semi-urban, working-class area that mixes industry with budding neighborhoods. Families in this level work to maintain a foothold in the system, dreaming of advancement to the wealthier tiers above. This tier also houses cities like Vitra, where innovation and ambition flourish. Here, merchants, scientists, adventurers, and academics live and work, climbing ever higher in their pursuits, striving for excellence and opportunity (though Vitra is considered to be also a part of Treftiel's High City).
High City – The highest tier, home to Treftiel’s elite. Accessible only to the most powerful, the High City blends magic and experimental technology into creations that seem almost divine. Entrance is restricted and granted only to those who’ve achieved exceptional status or influence.
A Culture of Progress
Treftiel places progress above all else, a value embodied by its most powerful organization: the Apex Fabricatum. This is not just a technocratic organization but a religious one, where innovation is seen as a sacred duty. In Treftiel, every new invention, every step forward in engineering, is viewed as a move closer to mastery over the physical world.
While technology dominates the continent, magic still has a place, particularly in the realms of arcane and magic. However, there’s a growing tension between the natural magic-using druids and the unbridled technological growth promoted by the Apex Fabricatum. This divide has led to factions and movements on both sides, each seeking to shape the future of Treftiel in different ways.
Social Hierarchy and Aspirations: The Principle of Transformation
In Treftiel’s society, status is not merely about having metallic enhancements but about the journey of transformation—beginning life in a natural, human form and then advancing through selective augmentation. The people of Treftiel view this transformation as a rite of progress and as a testament to an individual’s adaptation to the ideals of the Apex Fabricatum.
The hierarchy values augmentation because it reflects choice, effort, and refinement—a process of “perfecting” one’s human form through selective integration of technology. Thus, in Treftiel:
Born Flesh, Refined by Metal: To be part of the caste system, one must have been born with flesh. Status is earned as one replaces organic parts with metallic enhancements, symbolizing their dedication to progress and humanity’s potential for self-transformation.
Natural Progression: Each augmentation reflects an achievement, an earned enhancement that symbolizes growth. Ascending the caste system requires this natural progression, as each enhancement is acquired through skill, innovation, and social connections.
Warforged and Robots: Outsiders to the Caste System
For warforged, robots, and other fully artificial beings, they are seen as constructs rather than participants in Treftiel’s social hierarchy. Though they may be functional and, in some cases, intelligent, they are generally regarded as tools or helpers rather than individuals with status. This cultural divide has major implications:
Outsiders by Design: Since they are born from metal rather than flesh, warforged and robots are perceived as fixed entities, lacking the potential for the transformation that Treftiel’s society values. They are considered valuable for their utility but are excluded from the hierarchy’s privileges and respect.
Utility over Status: Warforged and robots may hold important roles—guards, laborers, or even companions to members of higher castes—but they are treated more as functional beings rather than individuals. Without the progression from flesh to metal, they lack the cultural merit Treftiel prizes.
Variations in Treatment: Depending on the region and its customs, some communities may treat warforged with more respect or even a sense of camaraderie. However, in cities like Vitra, where status is everything, they are often regulated to lower societal roles or even servitude.
Role of Warforged and Robots in Treftiel Society
While they are not part of the caste system, warforged and robots are essential to Treftiel’s functionality:
Servants of the Elite: Many Ascendants and Forged commission warforged as personal guards, workers, and helpers. Their loyalty and reliability make them valuable in a society where status and reputation are everything.
Tools of Industry: In the lower tiers, particularly in the Iron Forges and the Bright Terraces, warforged and robots play crucial roles in industrial production, heavy labor, and transportation. They are often outfitted with specialized upgrades to fulfill specific tasks, though these upgrades do not elevate their social standing.
Seekers of Identity: Some warforged develop an awareness of their exclusion from the caste system and pursue their own purpose within Treftiel. These individuals are rare and often face challenges in being accepted as equals, but they can represent a subculture of artificial beings searching for recognition beyond utility.
