Divinity
Verastia
Goddess of Understanding and Arcane Magic
Primary Briefing
Knowledge is easy to mistake for understanding.
A person may spend a lifetime filling libraries with books, memorising spells, or collecting theories without ever truly changing because of them. Verastia has never concerned herself with knowledge alone. Her teachings begin where knowledge ends.
She is worshipped throughout Shivath by wizards, philosophers, historians, explorers, and those who dedicate their lives to asking difficult questions. Among practitioners of Arcane Magic she is most often called the Great Wizard, a title so old that few agree on when it first appeared. Some traditions insist it belonged to her long before she ascended. Others claim it was only spoken after her divinity. Like much of Verastia's early history, certainty has long since given way to speculation.
To her faithful, learning is valuable only if it changes the person who learns. A spell copied without understanding, a thesis defended out of pride, or a truth repeated without reflection carries little worth. Every answer should leave the world slightly larger than it seemed before.
For that reason, hers has never been an easy faith.
Verastia encourages doubt, even when it is directed toward her own teachings. Her clergy revise old interpretations, challenge established doctrine, and rarely treat disagreement as a threat. That ideal, however, has never been perfectly reflected by the people who claim to uphold it. Nabhi's history is filled with scholars who preached humility while quietly believing themselves wiser than everyone who came before them.
Some questions leave marks that cannot be erased.
There are discoveries that make ordinary life difficult to return to. Ideas that refuse to leave the mind once understood. Patterns that begin appearing everywhere after being noticed only once. Many of Verastia's most celebrated followers disappeared into their work, abandoned everything they once valued, or spent decades pursuing a single unanswered question. Others returned convinced they had found the truth, only for later generations to prove them wrong.
Verastia has never said whether this is the price of understanding or simply the nature of mortal curiosity.
Her followers continue searching regardless.
